Inspiring words to live by from Arthur Ashe

It has been a very long while since Hattingdon and I have been here on her blog.

We always mean so well when we make yet another renewed effort to blog regularly. Time and again, other things get in the way and before we know it, weeks or months have gone by.

It’s not that it isn’t important. But those other things that get in the way, I think it’s simply just . . . life.

We were feeling very badly about it, until I came across these uplifting ideas. God bless Arthur Ashe for these encouraging thoughts.

DO WHAT YOU CAN”

Hattingdon snags Jada’s peace sign ballcap for herself

Hattingdon fell in love with the peace sign ballcap Jada was wearing the other day and has snagged it or herself. Jada doesn’t mind sharing.

“I am so in love with the peace sign Vivian created. And it is so darling on the front of that ballcap. I have to have it. It isn’t too 17-ish for me is it?”, says Hattingdon.

Thank you Hattingdon. No, not at all. It isn’t too 17-ish for you. You can wear anything and make us smile. See.

We are calling this design Amani. The name Amani has Kiswahili roots and means “peace.”

The Amani Hattingdon design is already in our online store.

Per your request, we have put the Amani peace sign on a button for you button lovers. And some other cute things.

Wishing you peace, love and and a hatful of smiles!

Jada shows off her new mane in a cheery hat parade all her own

Look at our girl Jada. You saw her the other day in the post about Hattingdon’s Family Tree.

A quick recap. Jada is from the Hattingdon Grey family who live on the West Coast. She is the little sister of cousin Marcus who is based in the Bay area. However, Jada lives in LA with their cousin Curtis where she is attending a special high school with a focus on the Arts.

We have restyled Jada’s mane into softly curled wave.

Here’s our Jada in a parade of her favorite hats.

The first hat is a familiar one and worth revisiting to see it with her new look mane. It is what Vivian calls a schoolgirl hat. Here it is in a gorgeous fuscia with multi colored button on its upturned brim.

Next up we have Jada in a rich red beret with her initial on the front in white. The family resemblance to Hattingdon is remarkable don’t you think?

Speaking of looking like Hattingdon, here’s Jada in a blushing pink picture hat with a black trimmed brim. Sweet!

For relaxing and having fun Jada sports an adorable brand new ballcap in black with a rounded crown and a chunky multi peace sign on front. Brim, button and nosebobs in co-ordinating colors of turqoise and green.

This ought to chase the winter blues away. Jada models a schoolgirl hat with green crown and a flowery patterned brim in pink, yellow, green and turquoise blue.

These designs are not yet in the shop. We value your feedback and it does influence what we offer for purchase.

Let us know what you think in comments or by email.

We hope Jada brought you a big hatful of smiles.

Top of the Toppers

Top o’ the morning to ya. Let’s talk toppers.

I thought Hattingdon ought to have a top hat or two in her wardrobe and of course she looks fabulous in them.

I started off by designing four in January 2016 adding another in February.

In September I created Midge for National Mad Hatter Day, October 6, 2016.

The Midge design won the recently announced Best New Design Award of 2016, and a huge favorite. Huge! We added Midge to the shop to meet the demand.

We have also had huge calls for Trill — which is the look I created right at the end of December for Hattingdon to wear to the Opera — and we will be adding that design to the shop soon.

There are three variations on Trill. One Hattingdon is holding opera glasses in her mouth, another she is peering out of them and the last one, which is the one that you voted to go on sale, is the third where she has her opera glasses resting on the brim of her top hat.

There have been brisk sales of five of the top hats I designed for Hattingdon. To make our list top five list we have added your likes, comments and emails to come up with the final result.

Here, in reverse order, are the top five toppers of 2016.

SASSY: Good evening. Welcome to Hattingdon’s First Annual Hatful of Smiles™ Awards.

This is Sassy Topper of Hatsquisite Magazine™ and I will be your host.

Just in time too. Oh, wow. Look. Here comes the hatted cartoon diva herself. Hattingdon. Yes. Here she is. Oh my!

Hattingdon is absolutely stunning in a glittery gold turban trimmed with the most devastating green feather. Simply dazzling. Hopefully I can get a few words from Hattingdon before we start.

Here’s a reminder of this year’s categories.

SASSY: Hattingdon. Hattingdon! Come here. Come here dear and say a few words to your fans and hat lovers around the world.

HATTINGDON: Hello Sassy. And all of you out there. Hello darlings. It’s absolutely smashing to see you.

SASSY: You look absolutely scrumptious. And oh so glamorous.

I had heard that you would be wearing a new avant-garde piece that is “out of this world”, so they say.

HATTINGDON: Yes. Vivian did make me something very special. But I decided as cute as it is, not quite right for the look I wanted for this occasion. And it is an occasion, isn’t it Sassy luv?

SASSY: It certainly is. I can hardly wait to see what hats have won. You had some unforgettable moments in hats last year.

But I must talk for just a minute about that sparkling turban. I am in love with it. And that emerald green textured feather! How gorgeous is that. And right on trend in green too. Green is everywhere this year. So 2017. And just yummy.

HATTINGDON: Thank you. I do look devastatingly lovely — and as you so charmingly put it — yummy.

SASSY: Yes. Um.

Well then. Talk a bit about the award-winning hats we are about to see. Do you have a particular favorite?

HATTINGDON: Yes I do. It was voted Best New Design which is the very first award we are announcing. Instead of talking about it, let’s see it.

SASSY: Yes. Let’s do. I am giddy with excitement. Here we go!

SASSY: Hattingdon, you look exceptional in this hat. And that wig. My goodness. Vivian did a great job designing this for you.

HATTINGDON: Yes, Vivian was inspired putting this look together for me. I love everything about this. And you know how fussy I am. Snort!

SASSY: And Vivian created it to celebrate Mad Hatter’s Day and wasn’t even going to sell it.

HATTINGDON: True. But the demand was incredible for reasons you can see!

SASSY: On to the next.

HATTINGDON: Vivian loves this design. So does our staff. I am so happy it has been so successful for her. It was retired, but once people became reacquainted with it, back in the shop it went.

Hattingdon Most Commented on Design

SASSY: Well, there’s a lot we can say here. And the reason it was the most commented on, right?

HATTINGDON: Oh, yes. Snort! I don’t mind it. I love the glasses. Not so sure about the scarf. But we couldn’t come up with a hat to go with those glasses. I thought maybe a beret. But Vivian for some reason was married to the scarf idea.

SASSY: Hmmm. I’m trying to imagine it with a beret. But what color?

HATTINGDON: Vivian redesigned it in fuschia based on the suggestion of a fan who was crazy about the design with the scarf. Here’s how that turned out. What do you think? A beret in fuschia? Or do you like this?

SASSY: I sort of do. Well. Yes, I believe I do like it in this color. Funny how much a color change can impact a look isn’t it? This was never for sale, right, because of permissions and . . .

Oooh, I love what’s coming up. Sigh.

HATTINGDON: Quit peeking.

Hattingdon Most Stylish

SASSY: This is just so pretty. And indeed très chic. Oh, and the beauty mark. Did you style it that way or did Vivian?

HATTINGDON: Vivian.

SASSY: Now, these last two awards are not based on sales or anything. They are Staff picks. Right?

HATTINGDON: Well the Staff selects the contenders. And then the Staff votes. But they also send ballots out to Club Hattingdon members who vote too.

Vivian really needs to come up with a better name than Club Hattingdon. Snort.

SASSY: I think I get what you mean.

HATTINGDON: The Jenny Rose design was created for the Kentucky Derby. The Lily hat was designed for the Oaks.

SASSY: Can you believe it? We have arrived at the final award.

Hattingdon Most Darling

SASSY (chuckling): Well this is the most darling isn’t it?

HATTINGDON: Yes it is and I love wearing it. We are crazy about snowflakes around the studio too. Good time of year for Flap, wouldn’t you say?

SASSY: Yes indeedy it is (still chuckling).

Well, that’s a wrap ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for joining us for the 2017 Hatful of Smiles™ Awards.

Good night everyone. Say good night, Hattingdon.

HATTINGDON: Good night Hattingdon. Good night everyone. Love you!

The End.
